.38ct Alexandrite Oval
This is a nice alexandrite oval, representative of natural alexandrites of Russian origin. It is fairly well cut, with a small window and lots of brilliance, but the color seems to fade slightly in the center of the gem. In sunlight, the moderately saturated color is a grassy green with a slightly brownish tone in the center. It becomes a rich reddish purple when viewed under a standard incandescent light. This gem readily exhibits nearly 100 percent color change even under very bright "natural" incandescent lights.
The stone has a strong chatoyant (cats eye effect) sheen that can be easily seen on its surface, which appears in the photos as a slight cloudiness and accounts for the SI1 clarity grade. The stone is otherwise flawless to the unaided eye.
