Bixbite (Red Beryl) Specimens
Bixbite, also known as red beryl or red emerald, is one of the rarest gemstones in the world. It is found only in the Wah Wah mountains and the Thomas mountains of Utah. One estimate suggests that for every faceted bixbite gem, there are 150,000 diamonds, 12,000 emeralds, and 9,000 rubies. It is so rare that very few people are even aware of its existence.
This is a shame, because red beryl is a fantastically beautiful stone, usually a wonderful raspberry red. It occurs in small, often heavily included crystals. The largest crystal I have heard of is less than six carats, and the largest cut gem is under three carats. Most of the faceted bixbite that I have seen is less than one quarter carat per gem.
We have looked around, and there seem to be only a few specimens of this material available anywhere, at any price. At least one Ebay source is offering crystals similar to some of these for as much as $1500 per carat! We are very fortunate to be able to offer these stones at a price that can be afforded by most serious collectors.
