While tumblers, cabbing machines and trim saws can be had for a few hundred dollars each, a slab saw is a major investment for most of us. Unless you cut a lot of slabs on a regular basis, $3000 to $12,000 is a lot of money to spend for a machine that only does one job, even if it is indispensable for that job.
For those of you who only need to cut stone into slabs occasionally, we offer our inexpensive slabbing service. Send us your rough rock, tell us how you want it oriented and how thick you want your slabs, and we will cut them for only $5.00 per cutting hour. For reference, it takes about 20 minutes to cut through a six inch piece of chert or jasper. Softer stones may be cut more quickly.
We use an 18-inch saw that can handle chunks up to 8 inches thick. We use a thin blade that only cuts away one sixteenth of an inch with each cut, so "kerf loss" is minimized. Even so, pleas understand that 1/16" WILL be ground away on every cut, so if you ask for 1/4" slabs, for example, the cut slabs will weigh only 80% as much as the original stones you send. 20% of the weight will be lost to the saw.
If you need slabs cut, please
contact us by email, and we will arrange to do the job for you. We will provide an estimate of the time and cost before we start the job.
